There is disturbing content in the Bible. Many readers are surprised by the violence, darkness, and despair they encounter in its pages. Sometimes people read around these parts of the text, hoping to minimize its presence. Some people point to this material as their reason for avoiding the Bible altogether.
But what if it’s there for a reason? What if we need stories which scare us, images which disturb us, and texts which go on haunting us with their shadow?
In the modern world, we have a genre for describing this kind of literature: horror. What might that genre have to teach us about becoming better Bible readers?
